Michelin & Nissan in trouble

Not sure what happened with Michelin tire, but I sort of predicted the outcome of Nissan. I stayed away from getting their stocks and buying any of their cars. They ousted their top CEO (Ghosn) in 2018 for reason of corruption, after the guy saved the company from bankruptcy. Instead, he got replaced by a dumb old Japanese with zero vision. They make expensive EV that nobody wants when every others like Toyota and Honda make hybrid that sells. So long Nissan, hope the gov won't bail you out.

Nissan hasn't been very popular here, their trucks seemed to break down alot. Hyundai and KIA are the most popular because they are inexpensive but they have so many recalls and every other month you hear it.

Yes, I heard they are lacking power. Also, they used to lack comfort too. I heard they are working on electric truck with Mitsubishi, for delivery in 2027. I'm not too sure that will happen since their EVs don't sell and you can't use EV truck for hard jobs.

Can't beat lower ends Hyundai or KIA if people only need things that move them from point A to B. Inexpensive and maybe cheap to fix too. Have you ever tried these cars in cold or snowy condition?

There is another Japanese trucking company called Hino motors that is now in trouble. Their trouble is partly due to them falsifying emission reports LOL. But I'm not too worried about them because they are subsidiary of Toyota. Toyota will never fail.

I would never buy Hyundai or KIA with all the reports of blown engines and fires.

I always had Toyota 4Runners most of them I built for off roading, very dependable and strong. But parts were not easy to get and were 4 times more expensive than North American cars.

You are spot on. I read that they’re facing a class-action lawsuit for engine fires. With such a small engine, it’s almost like a lawnmower catching fire.

Toyota 4Runners have many of their parts manufactured locally at their plant in Aichi Prefecture (about middle of Japan). Some smaller parts are sourced from nearby suppliers (not owned by Toyota), but all are made in Japan. These parts are generally crafted meticulously and any tiny deviation in measurement or material is usually not accepted, which may explain the cost. Some of these plants even offer tours, so if you enjoy working on cars, you might find them interesting.

Back in 2008, during the stock market crash, several of these quality local manufacturing plants had to close because major manufacturers like Toyota and Honda stopped placing orders. Fortunately, most have reopened and are thriving again now that Toyota and Honda are selling a lot of cars.

I now like Chevy because parts are inexpensive, readily available and even cheaper at the scrap yard, there's 10 of them waiting for you.

Yes, Chevys are inexpensive, even after import costs. A few locals use their trucks for hauling, but they’re not very popular here due to their width, which makes it difficult to navigate smaller streets.

I drove a lower grade Chevy when I was a student in the States. Overall, the engine was pretty powerful, as long as you didn’t mind little things breaking down, like power windows, latches, squeaks, rattles, etc. There was one exception, a Chevy Cavalier, that drove me so mad that I once thought of driving it off a cliff. I had to replace the alternator about ten times due to shorts and overheating. Rattles so much inside like you have an angry rattle snake as pet. It had plenty of power to go over a cliff.

Talking about factory tour:

The Honda factory that makes transmission is open for a tour. This plant used to make motorcycles, but it was switched to making car transmissions.

There is also a soy-sauce tour that once you get in, you get out and smell like a fresh bean.

Holy cow, despite their financial troubles, Nissan is opening a massive dealership in northern Japan (Fukushima). The dealership features a partnership with Starbucks, with a coffee shop inside the building. The lot also offers quick EV charging. But who’s going to buy an EV in areas where charging stations are so scarce? Maybe they’re banking on people buying cars while grabbing their coffee :) They need to fire their CEO and quick.

Thoughts on the merger? I think it will be beneficial for both companies.

It depends on how the merger is done. If they keep only smart cook from Honda in the kitchen, it would probably work. Now, Nissan has several mediocre cooks that are reluctant to relinquish their position, despite steering the company to the edge of cliff.

I wonder why Nissan keeps on making EV that nobody here really buys. China has diluted the market with theirs. The company has zero market share, terrible car lineup, and zero R & D. Honda is picking up dirty rug from a garbage can. They need good soap to clean it first, then hopefully replenish the color with new dyes. Absolutely risky moves by Honda. If they are not careful, it won’t be a Honda. They know it’s a risky business, so they plan on running Nissan separately but as part of same group. Still somewhat risky.

I'm failing to see how this benefits Honda, at all. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that there was a lot of governmental pressure for Honda to get into this deal, considering there isn't much of anything on the Nissan side for them to want to take ownership of or learn from, same with Mitsubishi.

Mitsubishi motors is part of Mitsubishi group that handles Japanese defense (defense contractor). They are the biggest from them all, even Toyota.

You are right as these companies are pressured by the gov. Nissan is essentially owned by the gov. The gov initially rejected Renault's partnership because they didn't want France to have access to Nissan's tech. They did it by ousting their CEO (Goshn) and replacing him with a clueless Japanese. Made up bunch of BS corruption stories to justify their actions. It's political. Nissan is worthless and their EV tech is outdated like 10 years behind other companies.

That's about what I figured, just based on my rudimentary understanding of things. Hopefully something good comes out of the merger, and it doesn't just weigh Honda down.

They are installing Honda's management to Nissan and inject more capital with stocks into it. It's mission impossible. The gov needs to stop meddling with corporates.

I’ve been saying that it was a mission impossible. The partnership has been broken & Honda is no longer involved with Nissan. Initially Honda planned to put Nissan under their group but the dumbases with high egos at Nissan didn’t want to.

I bet they are now hoping for gov to bail them out. Tax payers money will go to waste. They can’t survive even by selling assets. Nobody buy their overpriced electric cars. I hope they go away for good.

You definitely called it and I agree it makes no sense. I'm sure there is something behind the scenes where Honda realize that it's not worth it.
