1: 8 Pocher Huracan Build

After many years desiring this model I was reluctant to purchase it because of the extremely high price tag since it was produced in 2015 and since then people have been sitting on them for years, a full decade later they are reselling them at 2-5x the cost.

I finally pulled the trigger. When the delivery guy took it out of the side door of the van I was shocked it was almost too big to get out! The exterior box was huge, I had to bring it sideways to get it inside the door frame! It will be the biggest most detailed model I'll ever do, a 1/8 scale Huracan from Pocher which contains 958 pieces. I will need to paint it to the appropriate borealis color. Sorry @Goose81 it will not remain green. The exterior paint is going to be challenging, I had the paint shop prepare a real batch of the paint. A tricoat procedure which means a specific colored primer, an orange base coat, then +-4 pearl coats and then a clear coat!

It would be cool to display at a car show. I'm not sure it would fit, cross wise yes but it might be too wide. I could try at a regular super car show but it would be challenging for the summer's main event.

It was a record year with thousands of attendees. I went to retrieve it, only had time for a 20 minute snooze and got back to the event, it took almost 1 3/4 hour to and from when usually it takes 25 minutes. Maybe I could stash it in my GF's car for the day and stay on site with plenty of coffee.

That was an insane traffic jump, 105 minutes instead of 25 is crazy! Staying on-site sounds like a great idea. Maybe renting a nice camper van would be a good option so you can relax while watching people admire your car

I'd much rather have a fully built model ready made but in this size the only brand (Pocher) is in model form and was only available in red, yellow or green. At least it's fun to do but tedious and time consuming if you want it to look accurate and sharp. I pondered for days if I wanted to work on such a large project. The other thing they stopped producing these a long time ago and once these models are in their forever home they will be unobtainable. You can't have any other diecast with this much detail, literally an accurate frame chassis, seat belts, working suspension, you literally have to assemble the engine with all the hoses, even the alternator has its own cooling hoses! You have to tell yourself there's no deadline it'll take months and the journey to build it must be enjoyable.

You could assemble this model without customization but it would be a disappointment to me to have it in a different color and the interior black from the modeling factory.

It has electronics to flash lights & the tiny speaker also produces recorded exhaust note (not close at all to the real thing, but it's there)

WOW! Pretty cool! I'll think about it if I want to put lights in mine, more likely not but very cool.

My project is enough, I can't tell you how many hours I spent today detailing each stitch of the seats. I'm waiting for some flock to come in to simulate alcantara on the seats. I hope it's the right color.

I also ordered an air bush set and air compressor parts, then I need to modify my compressor fittings to make it work. I didn't want to spend $350 for a complete kit to use it only once.

Comparing the 1:8 seats to a 1:18 car and 1:64 (hotwheel) size. I already noticed some discrepancies, there's an extra stitch line on the model

From these sprues to this, however the interior is still a work in progress.
I searched online and ordered a bunch of stuff to customize the interior. Some flock to emulate carpet and alcantara. I was extremely lucky to get some orange flock with such a close match! I spent a whole day visiting various stores to try and find orange Tamiya paint only to find out the spray paint was banned in the country last October! Luckily I found one can and you can't even import it. I needed that specific color under the flock otherwise whatever color is underneath bleeds through.

It is very time consuming to get things right, I had to redo the alcantara portion of the seats so many times because it looked horrible and the tutorials online were not adequate for this. With trial and error, it took 3 coats of primer, 3 coats of orange paint, a wet coat of varnish while sprinkling some flock. Once dry I had to fix some bleed through and more detailing.

I made some carpet flock in the bottom of the cab, alcantara for the knee pads in black, and orange for the center console armrest, dash etc. The center console was the only painted item from factory but with all the wrong colors so I had to redo all of it.

The decals are so small many of them are the size of a needle head! I had to use jeweler's visor to even see them!

There's even miniscule rubber hoses for brake lines. However they are limp, I haven't found a way to form into shape so I used thermostat wires to form some lines. It's crazy to think a lot of things will never be seen once fully built.




The brake pedal is functional with a rod going to the brake booster!

Superb job! The seat and carpet look great! How long did it take you to paint the alcantara to orange & the carpet?

There's a site that let you print a 3D model of yourself. Imagine a model of you sitting inside The crowd at the car show would oomph and ahh when seeing it

I didn't count the hours but it's a lot, probably in excess of 14+ hours including painting other stuff. I told myself might as well do a good job and as accurate as I can. It's the mount everest of models. I'm going to start sanding the diecast body in the next couple days.

Yes! And you can put a smaller scale of another model on the dash of the big model too. People are going to flip with excitement

I spent many more hours, every evening actually sanding the green shell and today was Exorcism day, I had to exorcise and expulse the green goblin inside but it held a firm grip and it didn't want to let go. He fought me every step of the way! Several incantations and silent curses later...

4 coats of white primer
3 base coats that look like flat orange primer
3 pearl coats. Unfortunately I ran out of pearl, I need a fourth maybe a fifth coat. At first when I tested the pearl spray it looked like a clear, I thought the paint guy screwed up the mix. On the 3rd coat the pearl started to show. I had to stop for the weekend to get another batch of paint mixed. The paint alone will cost me $300.

I don't know if I should sand the roof to get rid of these 2 spot and respray, sometimes when you try to fix these issues it gets worse. I have to redo the hood as it didn't turn out well, so that will be my test piece and I'll see if I attempt the roof.

After that I'll need to put some clear coat.

Today I chatted with a friend of mine who likes to build Gundam models.

He said that if the spots are noticeable to you or visible under light, you should sand them and respray. Nothing beat the satisfaction of having a perfect model. However, if you plan to put any decals on them like factory stripe, it may not be worthwhile your time.

What I found out, if the paint had hardener and inexpensive I would do that however;

Unfortunately since it's automotive paint there's no hardener in the pearl coat and sanding will make it worse, I would have to strip everything down. Those damn spray cans nozzles spewed out. The paint is so expensive I'm already over $350.

I had to redo the hood 6 times and I thought I had completed the back end but it lightly touched some paper and the paint peeled in that area. I'm attempting to spot repair. Total nightmare!

Aye, not worth it since it took so much work to get the paint to stick. Now I understand why they put the car in a baking room just to harden the paint. Can’t do that with a plastic model, obviously as it would melt. Sometimes a bit of imperfections are perfect, like art.

Meanwhile I'm working on the paint... most of the rear engine bay is complete, engine, transmission, all hoses, suspension except the calipers. I learned a few thing during the build where components are. It would be so great if this would be accessible at all times when I fix the real thing. Did you know the vents beside the windows are the air intake for the engine.

I received some charcoal gray flock to mimic the alcantara on the dash, headliner, the roof pillars and door cards. On the Huracan it isn't black but very dark gray on those things. I started with the dash and here's what it looks like. Before I remove the tape on the vent or do all the other pieces in charcoal gray does it look good or would it look better in black? The floor has black flock for referral. Last 2 pictures for referral of the real car, the alcantara on the dash is actually a lighter gray than the rest like the very dark door cards.

I think charcoal grey looks better. No need to turn it to black. The contrast with the floor looks great to give it a contrast. Does it come with carpets, with Huracan logo?

Too late, I removed the gray flock and put it all the pieces black. The gray flock was a bit too pale.

It comes with 2 plain black carpets. I'll have to figure something out to pipe them orange. I haven't checked if it comes with separate logos.
