Behold, bought a new laptop today to replace my aging dell. I have been relying on old Dell laptop during my travels.

This new laptop is like a brick. I think it weighs about 5 kilos. Rtx 5090 :)

I've been purchasing tools I couldn't really afford in the past plus the H requires so many uncommon sockets, wrenches and other tools. I always buy them on sale, if I think it'll come handy it goes into the cart. Contrary to what many think Aliexpress also has good tools, you just have to know your stuff.

Good to know mechanic that knows their stuffs. What tools that you use often?

If you ever need any high quality tools like wrenches and knives, may want to visit Japan and check some local makers out. There are ktc tools and trusco that make their stuffs mainly in Japan. Although their tools may look the same on the outside, inside is totally different like using higher grade materials and coatings.

Also, if you ever need a good katana to guard your Lambo, lemme know! :)

No, not brands. Just type of tools. Like when cooking, I use scissors to cut most things rather than using knives. And I'm not Korean :)

yes, i know its an old thread but i always wonder why folks choose non Apple when buying a laptop / desktop, etc. Way back when I used to do Dell laptops, etc, I would get all those stinking bugs, scripts, viruses, whatever and the machine would run so unbelievably slow that it would be in the trash in a year or two. Since going to Mac, its been completely the opposite. I had a 2012 Mac desktop that still worked reasonably well, and we just replaced it with a newer 2021 Mac a few months ago that I hope will last 10+yrs. Are the newer non-Apple products much better, too, and dont get all screwy with age?

When Apple came on to the market, their closed system made it impossible for many programs to operate on. I'm in design and almost exclusively use a CAD program called SolidWorks. The only way to run Solidworks in the past on an apple was to modify it to boot in windows. Something I didn't want to deal with. Since I had a PC instead of a Mac, I also avoided the iphone and all other iproducts.
The customer base for apple also irritates the sh!t out of me. Best example. In 2010, samsung released the Galaxy S. It had a front facing camera....not the first phone with the Front facing camera, but the newest and most advanced phone that did. The iphone 3 did not have one. Appled people or SJBL's as I like to call them (Steve Jobs Ball Lickers) went on and on about how no one needs a front facing camera, it was the dumbest thing ever, if people needed a FFC iphone would have one, blah blah blah.....then a VERY short time later, the iphone 4 was released.....WITH a front facing camera. Now, per SJBL's it was the greatest thing ever, and it was SO much better than the Galaxy....blahblahblah. It is literally nauseating. Your statement above completely supports my take, you say, why would ANYONE buy anything but apple, like you literally cannot comprehend the purchase.

i get your take and can certainly comprehend purchasing the other...my statement was a bit dramatic, i realize. Do these non-apple purchases still deal with viruses, etc, etc as they used to a decade ago? that experience i had back then would make me run the other way for sure if thats still the case. I am certainly not a SJBL but as one who demands very little from computers aside from a reasonable internet browsing experience and some emails, I think Apple products are the bomb!

My response was definitely a bit dramatic as well, but you did say "i always wonder why folks choose non Apple when buying a laptop / desktop" which is pretty much the same thing as saying "why would anyone buy anything but apple"
And I directly answered that with my SolidWorks thing. However, there are still some virus issues, but just like 10 years ago.....you had to kinda be doing dumb things to get virus's. Can they happen, sure, but they usually come from phishing emails, very rarely web surfing. My PC experience is almost 100% corporate, so I have the benefit of an IT company keeping my PC up to date and 'all good'. You hear about malware attacks, Ransomware, etc. All from email being opened by an employee inside a corporate environment where the IT is not secure.

I bought a laptop a few weeks ago for only one purpose, to run VCDS to be able to diagnose my H better than a scan tool. I booted up and spent over an hour and a half declining all the BS stuff they want to install. It was so aggravating. I downloaded VCDS then put it back in the box ready for use. I was not really happy to pay over $800 for a computer I'll rarely use. The only consolation it will come in handy when my PC breaks down and need to shop for another one.

Asus Vivobook 16".

As for apple, I never understood the hype, in the beginning with computers nothing was compatible with it. Then I wondered why everyone was paying so much more for a niche thing. I will never buy any of their products.

We talk to hardware using software. Software talks to hardware through the operating system (OS).

Now imagine a city run by a bunch of different mayors. Everyone builds whatever they want. Houses everywhere, random roads, no rules, no locks. When a fire breaks out, good luck getting a fire truck through. When a criminal shows up, he can disappear into any house and take ten different escape routes.

That is basically a PC running Windows.

Now imagine one strict mayor. Clean layout. Organized roads. Houses are locked. Checkpoints at intersections. If something goes wrong, it’s easier to contain and deal with.

That is closer to Apple's iOS.

Both cities can still have problems. But one is clearly easier to control, and harder for troublemakers to mess with.

I use both OSes at work and also runs other type of OSes for servers.

Apple is generally superior but PC always have this edge because of its flexibility and more accessible due to lower cost.

And about privacy… let’s just say the mayor always has a master key :) There is backdoor in every OS. There is no real privacy in digital world unless you encrypt it using quantum cryptography like PQC.
